How to Add a 2D Product to Your 3D Floor Plan

When you use 3D Floor Planner on Houzz Pro, you can quickly add walls, windows, doors, flooring, generic products and more to bring your project vision to life. Now, you can customise your 3D floor plan even more by adding custom finishes and turning 2D furniture and decorative objects into a 3D product. By turning products into a 3D model, you can showcase the exact items you plan to use in your design, which will better highlight and sell clients on your vision for the space.

How It Works

Using a Clipper product or a My Items product from your library, you define the outline of the product, add the dimensions, and we will turn it into a 3D model. This 3D product can then be added to your floor plan — it will also be saved to your library and the Source tab so you and other professionals can use it in the future.

Depending on your Houzz Pro plan, you will receive a cap on the number of 2D to 3D product conversions you can complete each month. This number will appear in the Convert Product to 3D button, and it will decrease each time you create a 3D model (as shown below).

It is important to note that each product conversion counts towards that number — though converted rugs and paintings do not require a 3D product credit. If you are unhappy with the 3D model quality, it will still count toward your monthly cap. Because of this, it's important to select products that fit our product requirements mentioned below.

Product Requirements

There are a few requirements for the products you use with this feature:

  • To turn it into a 3D model, the 2D product must be added to your library or added using the Clipper tool. Read How to Save and Source Products or How to Use the Clipper Tool to learn more about this process. You can also add a new product directly from your 3D floor plan (more details below).
  • While most furniture products are supported, you should not use this feature on windows, doors, stairs or kitchen cabinets.
  • If you want to use this feature on rugs or paintings, be sure to select Rugs or Paintings during the conversion process (more details below).
  • If you want to use this feature to create a custom finish — such as tile, wallpaper, fabric or flooring — be sure to select Finish during the conversion process. The conversion process for finishes slightly differs — read How to Add a Custom Finish to learn more.
  • For best results, we recommend only using product images where the full product is shown. Product photos that include multiple items, a partially obscured product, or a complex background won't work well when you convert to 3D.
Create New 3D Product

To create a new 3D product, open up the relevant 3D floor plan. Select My Products from the menu on the right.

You will then be able to select a product from your library (the product needs to have an image included). You can scroll through all the products to find the one you would like, or you can use the search and filters at the top to narrow down your search. Select the black Convert to 3D button next to the product you would like to add.

If you select the purple Convert Product to 3D button instead, a new screen will appear where you can either select from an existing product in your library, or you can upload a new product.

If you want to select an existing product, select the relevant product icon from the list, or search for the product, then click Select and Continue.

If you want to upload a new product, you can click the Create Product icon to manually add a new product to your library. You can also download the Clipper and add a product that way.

A preview of the product image will appear. Depending on the product type you are converting, select Furniture, Paintings or Rugs in the right menu (read more about Finish here).

If everything looks good, click Convert to 3D.

If you are converting a Furniture product, you need to add a mask to your product. A mask is an outline or cut out of the product — it is a key part of the process, because it helps us understand where the background ends and the product begins.

Click the Add Mask button to start. On the left side of your screen, click on the product at several end points to create an accurate mask. As you click, the product image cutout will show on the right side of your screen.

If you make a click by mistake, click the Undo or Redo buttons at the top left to remove or add back. If you want to remove an entire area of your product, click the Remove Area button, then click on the area you would like to remove on the left side of your screen.

If you are unhappy with your entire mask and would like to start over, click Reset. When you are happy with your mask, click Generate Product.

Please Note: At the bottom of this screen, there is a Public/Private dropdown for Custom pros. Custom pros have the option to include or exclude a product from our shared 3D library. To include in the shared library so that others can use it, click Public. To exclude from the product library, click Private. For all other pro packages, the default is Public and cannot be changed.

Your 3D product will now generate. This might take several minutes to complete, so feel free to continue working on your 3D plan until it is ready.

Once complete, you will receive a notification at the bottom of your screen to inform you it's ready for review.

When you click Review, the next step is to adjust the product orientation (Furniture only). The goal here is to adjust the product so that it faces the front as much as possible. Click and drag directly on the product to adjust, or use the toggle bar on the right to adjust. Once complete, click Next.

If you are unhappy with the product and would like to start again, select the Thumbs Down icon at the bottom. A new screen will appear to confirm you want to delete the product. Please Note: Even if you delete the product, this product will still count as a conversion against your plan's total — credits are not restored.

In the next screen, you will need to input the Product Type in the dropdown menu — Furniture, Decorative Accents, Wall Objects, Ceiling Objects, Rug or Painting.

  • A Furniture item is a product that is placed on the floor.
  • A Decorative Accent is a product placed on shelves or a table.
  • A Wall Object is a product placed on a wall.
  • A Ceiling Object is a product that is attached to the ceiling.
  • A Rug is a product that goes on the floor.
  • A Painting is a photo, painting or simple mirror placed on a wall.

You will also input the product dimensions (if you used Clipper, dimensions will automatically populate if already stored). While you can edit dimensions later, it is very important to be as accurate as possible here so that the 3D model is not out of proportion or small. Click Save Product to complete.

If you are unhappy with the product, click the Thumbs Down icon at the bottom. A new screen will appear to confirm you want to delete the product. Please Note: Even if you delete the product, this product will still count as a conversion against your plan's total — credits are not restored.

Your 3D product will now appear in your library — you will also receive a notification at the bottom of your screen to inform you it's ready to add. Click the Add button or the + button in your library to add directly to the 3D floor plan.

Add 3D Product to Floor Plan

If you would like to add a 3D product you created to your floor plan, click the My Products icon in your right menu, then find your 3D product from the list. Tip: To save time, use the 3D Products filter at the top to only view 3D products instead of your entire product library.

Click the + icon next to the product you want to add.

The product will now appear on your floor plan. Just like any other product, you can click and drag the product, as well as rotate the product with your mouse. You can also select the product to duplicate, rotate 90 degrees or delete the product from your floor plan.

You can also view the product in Dollhouse or Walkthrough mode.

3D Product Source Library

To expand the number of 3D products available for use in your 3D floor plan, click on the Source icon. Here, you will see an extensive list of thousands of other 3D products. This section includes items created by the Houzz 3D team, as well as converted 3D products created by other professionals.

The converted 3D products will appear with a Sparkle icon (as shown below). Any product you create will appear in this source library, unless you mark it as a Private product during the upload process (only an option for Custom pros).
