How to Add a Custom Finish to Your 3D Floor Plan

Within Houzz Pro 3D Floor Plans, you can create an accurate layout with walls, windows, doors, flooring, and more – and easily customise it to match your design. Along with custom products, you can now import custom finishes – like tiles, wallpaper, fabric, or flooring – and reuse them across your projects.

By using real products and finishes in your 3D floor plans, you can more accurately showcase your ideas, align expectations, and help clients clearly visualise how their space will look before work begins.

How it Works

Similar to the existing 2D-to-3D product process, you can use Clipper to add a new finish to Houzz Pro, or you can add the finish under My Items in your library.

After you add it, you set the dimensions and AI automatically improves the image for a polished 3D look. You can choose to either use this AI-enhanced version or the original image, depending on what best fits your design. The 3D finish can then be added to your floor plan and saved to your library and Source tab for future use.

Please Note: While there is a cap on the number of 2D to 3D product conversions you can complete each month, there is not a cap on the number of custom finishes you can add to Houzz Pro.

Finish Requirements

Any finish can be converted to 3D, but there are a few requirements when using this feature:

  • To turn it into a 3D model, the 2D finish must be added to your library or added using the Clipper tool. Read How to Save and Source Products or How to Use the Clipper Tool to learn more about this process. You can also add a new finish directly from your 3D floor plan (more details below).
  • For best results, use finish images that are clear, without reflections, shiny areas, complex backgrounds, multiple items, or perspective views.
  • A custom finish can be added to almost anything throughout your 3D floor plan – this includes flooring, walls, worktops, shower walls and furniture.
  • Custom finishes cannot be added to items in your library that are listed as a Material type – they must be classified as a Product type to work. You also cannot add custom finishes to products within the Source tab or to an existing 3D converted product. If you are converting a product from 2D to 3D, we recommend converting the product in the finish you would like to show.
Create New Custom Finish

Once you open up the relevant 3D floor plan, there are several different ways to access the new 3D finish process.

For the first option, select My Products from the menu on the right, then click the purple Convert Product to 3D option to start the upload process.

Another option is to directly click a floor or wall on your 3D floor plan. Once selected, a right menu will appear with the material details. Select the current material to open up the Materials Library.

You can then create a new finish in the Materials Library by selecting Image to Finish.

In both instances, a new screen will appear where you can either select from an existing product in your library, or you can upload a new product.

If you want to use an existing product from your library, select the relevant product icon from the list, or search for the product, then click Select and Continue.

If you want to upload a new product, you can click the Create Product icon to manually add a new product to your library. You can also download the Clipper and add a product that way.

When you select Create Product, you will need to input the product details. Enter the product name, product image, cost code (if relevant), supplier, link, description, price and more. Be sure to add an image so the import is successful. Click Create once complete.

A preview of the image will appear. Be sure that Finish is selected in the right menu (read more about Furniture, Paintings and Rugs here).

If everything looks good, click Convert to 3D.

Your 3D finish will now generate. This might take several minutes to complete, so feel free to continue working on your 3D plan until it is ready.

Once complete, you will receive a notification at the bottom of your screen to inform you it's ready for review.

When you click Review, the next step is to decide whether to use the AI Result or the Original Finish.

The AI Result will often create a more seamless, accurate finish, but sometimes the Original Finish is better depending on the finish you're uploading.

Click the circle next to each choice to see a visual preview on the left. Once you've selected the best option, click Next.

In the next screen, you will need to drag the rulers and add in the width and length measurements for the finish. You can either input the measurements in the text boxes on the right, or you can add them to the rulers on the left.

When adding the dimensions, it is important to be as accurate as possible to ensure proper proportions. In the example below, there is one large format tile with the measurements of 16.5cm x 16.5cm

If your known dimensions are for one plank or one tile in a sample, you will want to adjust the rulers to only highlight one plank/tile. Once complete, be sure to click Save Finish.

Your 3D finish will now appear in your library – you will also receive a notification at the bottom of your screen to inform you it's ready to add.

Add Custom Finish to Floor Plan

If you would like to add a 3D finish you created to your floor plan, you can do this either within the My Products section or the Materials Library section.

From My Products

Click the My Products icon in your right menu, then find your 3D finish from the list. Tip: To save time, use the 3D Finishes filter at the top to only view 3D finishes instead of your entire product library.

Click the + icon next to the finish you want to add.

Your floor plan will change to Dollhouse view. Here, you will need to select the wall, floor or object that you want to apply the finish to.

Once selected, the finish will appear on your floor plan, as well as in Dollhouse and Walkthrough mode. The image below shows the custom finish on the living room floor.

You can further customise wall finishes by adding partial wall treatments and moulding. To learn more, read How to Add Wall Finishes.

From Materials Library

The finish can also be found in the Materials Library under My Finishes.

To access, directly click the relevant floor, wall, worktop or product on your 3D floor plan. Once selected, a right menu will appear with the material details. Select the current material to open up the Materials Library.

Click the Materials dropdown to open the menu, then select My Finishes to see all your 3D finishes in one place.

To use the finish, just click the finish to add it.

The finish will now appear on your floor plan – you can also view in Dollhouse or Walkthrough mode. The image below shows the custom finish on the chimney breast wall.
