How to Add a Garage to Your 3D Floor Plan

If you are working on a custom home or full home renovation, you might need to add a garage to your 3D floor plan design. Houzz Pro offers a wide variety of custom garage features to bring your vision to life, including cabinets, workbenches, lockers, shelves, garage doors, and garage flooring materials. You can even add a car to finish up the look!

As you start to create your garage, the first step is to build the structure – add walls, windows, garage doors, and even cladding (at this time, roofing is not available). Once the exterior is complete, you can work on the interior finishes, such as flooring, wall colour, garage storage and furniture.

Add Walls

The first step of creating any room in your 3D floor plan is to build the walls. To do this, select the Draw Wall tool in the toolbar at the top of your 3D floor plan. Click your grid to start drawing the wall, then click again to end the wall.

To stop drawing walls and continue with other actions, click the Pointer button in the top toolbar. You can also select the ESC button on your computer keyboard.

Once your wall is created, you can drag and adjust the walls, input precise wall measurements, and change the wall angle. To learn more, read How to Create Accurate Wall Lengths.

Add Windows and Doors

The next step is to add windows and doors for your garage. You can do this in both Floor Plan and Dollhouse mode, though Floor Plan is a little easier for proper placement.

To access all the door and window options, click the Structures icon in the right menu, then select Doors or Windows from the dropdown.

There are a wide variety of door and window styles to choose from. For doors, you can find both interior and exterior doors, as well as different styles of single- and double-car garage doors. For windows, you can select picture windows, bay windows, sliding windows, double hung windows and more.

Click on your preferred door or window to add it to your floor plan.

Once your door or window is on the floor plan, you can adjust the placement by clicking and dragging the product. If you need a precise measurement from the product to the wall, you can change the measurement number directly on the floor plan to move it. You can also duplicate, flip or delete the product by selecting the relevant icon on your floor plan.

On the right side of your screen, you can adjust the product dimensions, as well as change the product finish/paint colour and hardware finish (if relevant). For windows, you can also adjust the window distance from the floor.

Continue to add the relevant windows and doors as needed. Once they are added, you can view them in Dollhouse mode to make sure the placement, finish and overall design looks good.

Add Exterior Cladding

After adding windows and doors, you can then select the relevant exterior cladding. There are a wide variety of cladding materials, including brick, concrete, plaster, metal cladding, stone and wood cladding. You can even customise the paint colour for each material so it better reflects your design.

To access your exterior material options, click the relevant exterior wall in Dollhouse mode, then select Wall Style Material in the right menu. If you want to apply a material to multiple exterior walls at once, hold down the Shift key, then select all the relevant walls.

The Materials Library will appear. Select the dropdown menu at the top, then select Walls (Exterior) to find the cladding options. Choose the preferred material from the menu to view the colour and design choices. Once you find the style you like, click on it to view it directly on your 3D floor plan.

Your cladding will now appear on your 3D floor plan. You can then further customise your cladding by changing the colour and/or rotating the cladding direction. To learn more, read How to Add Exterior Finishes to Your 3D Floor Plan.

Add Interior Finishes

Now that the exterior is complete, it's time to work on the interior, including flooring and wall finishes.

Flooring

To add flooring, first be sure that the walls are completely enclosed. Then, simply click on the floor of the garage. Room details will appear on the right side of your screen. Click the material selector under Floor Style to view your flooring material options.

The Materials Library will appear. Select the dropdown menu at the top, then select Flooring to find the flooring options. Choose the preferred material from the menu to view the colour and design choices. Once you find the style you like, click on it to view it directly on your 3D floor plan.

Wall Finishes

To add wall paint and other wall materials, click the relevant interior wall in Dollhouse mode, then select Wall Style Material in the right menu. If you want to apply a material to multiple walls at once, hold down the Shift key, then select all the relevant walls.

The Materials Library will appear. Select the dropdown menu at the top, then select Walls (Interior) or Paint to find the material and colour options. Choose the preferred material from the menu to view the colour and design choices. Once you find the style you like, click on it to view it directly on your 3D floor plan.

Add Garage Furniture

Finally, you can complete the look of your garage by adding garage furniture in either Floor Plan or Dollhouse mode.

To find garage furniture, click the Generic Products icon in the right menu, then select Garage. To add a car, select Vehicles from the Generic Products menu.

Within garage products, you can add cabinets, ceiling racks, lockers, pegboards, shelves, workbenches and more.

Click on the product to add it directly to the floor plan.

Once a product is added, click on the product to rotate, duplicate and delete directly on your floor plan. In the right menu, you can change the product dimensions, distance from the floor, product rotation, and adjust the colour and/or finishes.
