How to Create a Kitchen in Your 3D Floor Plan

Kitchens are essential for any custom home or renovation, and you'll often need to design one in your Houzz Pro 3D floor plan. To save time, you can use a pre-built kitchen template, or create a custom kitchen from scratch to realise your specific vision.
To get started:
- Build the structure by adding walls, windows, and doors.
- Customise the interior with finishes like flooring, cabinets, benchtops, kitchen islands, splashback, appliances, and furniture.

Add Walls
To build your walls, select the Draw Wall tool in the toolbar at the top of your 3D floor plan. Click your grid to start drawing the wall, then click again to end the wall.
To stop drawing walls and continue with other actions, click the Pointer button in the top toolbar. You can also select the ESC button on your computer keyboard.
Once your wall is created, you can drag and adjust the walls, input precise wall measurements, and change the wall angle. To learn more, read How to Create Accurate Wall Lengths.

Add Windows and Doors
The next step is to add windows and doors to your kitchen. You can do this in both Floor Plan and Dollhouse mode, though Floor Plan is a little easier for proper placement.
To access all the door and window options, click the Structures icon in the right menu, then select Doors or Windows from the dropdown.
There are a wide variety of door and window styles to choose from. Click on your preferred door or window to add it to your floor plan.

Once your door or window is on the floor plan, you can adjust the placement by clicking and dragging the product. If you need a precise measurement from the product to the wall, you can change the measurement number directly on the floor plan to move it. You can also duplicate, flip or delete the product by selecting the relevant icon on your floor plan.
On the right side of your screen, you can adjust the product dimensions, as well as change the product finish/paint colour and hardware finish (if relevant). For windows, you can also adjust the window distance from the floor.

Add Flooring
Now that the structure is complete, it's time to work on the interior. Let's start with flooring.
To add flooring, first be sure that the walls are completely enclosed. Then, simply click on the floor of the kitchen. Room details will appear on the right side of your screen. Click the material selector under Floor Style to view your flooring material options.

The Materials Library will appear. Select the dropdown menu at the top, then select Flooring to find the flooring options. Choose the preferred material from the menu to view the colour and design choices. Once you find the style you like, click on it to view it directly on your 3D floor plan.
Under My Finishes, you have the option to select from custom finishes you have already added to your 3D floor plan, or you can add a new finish.
To learn about adding custom finishes, read How to Add Custom Finishes to Your 3D Floor Plan. Read How to Add Flooring to Your 3D Floor Plan to learn more about adding flooring.

Add Kitchen Cabinets
A key part of customising your kitchen is building out your cabinet and benchtop design.
To start, find the Generic Products icon in the right menu, then scroll down until you find Kitchen Products. Under Kitchen Products, you will see a wide variety of cabinet options, including bar height cabinets, base cabinets, islands, tall cabinets, and wall cabinets.
Open up the specific category to look at all the sizing options. Some cabinets even include different sink designs, as well as built-in ovens and microwaves (more on appliances below). If you would like to narrow down your selections, use the Filters button to search for specific characteristics.

As you start to add cabinets, you can customise every aspect of the cabinet to ensure it best fits your design. In the menu on the right, you can:
- Adjust the cabinet dimensions from a list of options (complete size customisation not offered at this time)
- Adjust the distance from the floor
- Rotate the cabinet to a specific degree
- Adjust the cabinet door style and material/colour
- Adjust the benchtop edge design and material/colour (more details below)
- Set the benchtop overhang (more details below)
- Select the door and drawer hardware style and material/colour
- Select the sink style and/or appliance finish (if relevant)
Be sure to select the Snapping icon in your top menu (as shown above) so all the cabinets connect seamlessly in your design.
Once you have finalised the design of your cabinet, you can easily replicate those selections by selecting the Duplicate button (as shown above). This ensures that all your base cabinets, for example, have the same design. From this menu, you can also rotate or delete a cabinet.

Adjust Benchtop
For each cabinet, you can change the benchtop details to get the style you want.
Click on the cabinet, then scroll down to view the Counter Style. Here, you can select the benchtop edge design, benchtop material, and overhang distance/location.
Please Note: You will need to select an edge design for the overhang details to appear.

Add Kitchen Island
If you want to create a kitchen island with bar or counter seating, you will need to make a few adjustments. First, you can add the cabinets using the same process, but be sure to select cabinets from the Islands or Bar Height Cabinets categories.

Once added, click on the cabinet and adjust the benchtop details. You will need to select an edge design to change the benchtop overhang and location. Make sure there is enough of an overhang added so the counter will extend out far enough to add barstools or counter stools.

Create Waterfall Benchtop
To add the popular waterfall benchtop to your kitchen island, find the Waterfall Island Edge Slab under the Islands section (or search in the search bar).
Once added to your plan, drag the waterfall counter to the edge of the benchtop you would like to add it onto. You can then adjust the depth of the counter in the right menu to match the existing benchtop you have. Adjust the Benchtop Material so that it matches as well.
Pro Tip: In the Materials Library, select In This Floor Plan in the dropdown menu to quickly add materials you are already using in this floor plan.

Add Splashback and Wall Finishes
To add a kitchen splashback or wall finish, select Dollhouse view, then click the wall where you want to apply the finish. Click Wall Style to adjust the wall material.

You will then be able to browse our Materials Library in the right menu. Use the dropdown at the top to narrow down your options. To add a finish, use the Walls (Interior) menu. Here, you'll find everything from shiplap to stone, tile, wallpaper, wood slats, and more.
Under My Finishes, you will find custom finishes you've uploaded previously, or you can add a new wall finish. To learn about adding custom finishes, read How to Add Custom Finishes to Your 3D Floor Plan.

Once you make a selection from the menu, it will appear on your floor plan.
If you only want the finish on a portion of the wall, you will need to turn it into a partial wall treatment. Read How to Add Wall Finishes to learn more about this process, as well as adding wall moulding and wallpaper.

Add Appliances
To add appliances to your kitchen floor plan, select the Generic Products icon in the right menu, then Kitchen Products. Under Kitchen Products, select Appliances. You can also select Benchtop Kitchen Appliances further down for smaller appliances, including blenders, coffee machines, food mixers and more.
Click the item to add to your floor plan.

Drag the appliance to the relevant location. Once added, you can adjust the dimensions and finishes in the right menu. You can also duplicate, rotate or delete directly on the floor plan.

Add Furniture
Finally, you can complete the look of your kitchen by adding furniture in either Floor Plan or Dollhouse mode.
Click the Generic Products icon in the right menu, then select Dining Sets, Kitchen Products, Lighting and more. You can also use the search bar at the top to look for a specific item.
Click to add, then adjust the dimensions and finishes in the right menu.

You can also add custom products to your floor plan — these are 2D products that you sourced online and converted to a 3D product.
Under My Products, you will find custom products you've previously uploaded, or you can convert a new product to 3D. To learn more about adding custom products, read How to Add a 2D Product to Your 3D Floor Plan.
